Exploring Torquay: Best Spots

Welcome to Torquay, a coastal town along the Surf Coast which marks the start of the Great Ocean Road. Stunning beaches, great walks, tasty coffee, local markets, live music, tucked away pasta bars and much more. Here’s my top list after living here since 2021.

Coffee Spots

  • Ginger Monkey: Calling all vegetarians! Order their tasty nachos and a chai latte at this cozy vegetarian cafe.

  • Swell Cafe: Great spot for coffee, delicious pastries and local produce. Very laid-back vibes and good place to go before going for a walk along the coast.

  • Pond: For a taste of Torquay's finest brekkie, head to Pond for yummy eggs and local brewed coffee. Sit back and relax.

  • Mavis Mavis: Very ‘surf town vibes’ cafe at Mavis Mavis. Order the mushroom or tuna toasty as it’s the ultimate hangout spot on their comfy coaches or outdoor benches in the sun.

Grab a Drink

  • Torquay Hotel: Sip on delicious cocktails at this modern Australian bar/restaurant. Whether you're into burgers or Aperol Spritz, this iconic venue has you covered.

  • Bells Brewery: Beer lovers, rejoice! Bells Brewery is totally where it’s at for kicking back and enjoying a few local beers.

  • Four Pines Brewery: Known for its awesome outdoor balcony and great burgers, this is a great spot for a drink and feed.

  • Juc Pub: Keep it classic at Juc Pub, where you can enjoy Friday night raffles, a game of pool, and hearty pub fare. It's the quintessential basic Aussie pub experience.

Let’s Dine

  • Bird Rock: Known for its Asian fusion cuisine, order the dumplings and bao buns along with a martini or mocktail.

  • Bob Sugar: Another great asian find along the esplanade. Don't miss out on the cauliflower – it's a game-changer.

  • The Kyn: Treat yourself to a fine dining experience at The Kyn, where modern Australian cuisine meets impeccable service. And be sure to try their coconut margaritas – they're divine.

  • Mortadeli Pasta Bar: Get a slice of Italy at Mortadeli Pasta Bar, order the arancini and definitely book ahead.

  • Pearl: For a taste of la dolce vita, head to Pearl for handcrafted pasta and exquisite wines. With only six items on the menu, each dish is a labor of love.

  • Ming Village: Craving Chinese? Ming Village is affordable and reliable.

  • Phoklore: Great pho and refreshing lychee martinis at Phoklore, conveniently located near the waterfront. No bookings required, walk ins only (get there early on weekends).

Local Produce at the Market

  • Torquay Farmers Market: Don't forget to check out the Torquay Farmers Market every Saturday from 8 am to 12 pm. Stock up on fresh bread, coffee, and local produce while supporting small businesses.

Live Music

  • Bomboras Pop Up Bar at Fishos Beach: Immerse yourself in the sounds of live music while soaking up the stunning ocean views at Bomboras Pop Up Bar. It's the perfect setting to enjoy live music.

  • Bird Rock: They often have DJs on Friday nights and live bands on Saturdays over summer. Check out their What’s On page on their website.

  • Torquay Hotel: Catch some of the hottest acts and bands at Torquay Hotel, the biggest music venue in town. From big names to local bands, they definitely pull some great acts here.

Nature Walks

  • Mermaid Beach Walk: Starting from Urquharts Bluff, wind back along the cliff for a nice coastal walk along the beach.

  • Steps Lookout: A great walk to start at Bird Rock car park, walk right along the coastal track until you turn left down to Steps lookout to watch the lovely coastline and surfers on the point.

  • Koori Cultural Walk: Learn about the rich Indigenous heritage of the area with a stroll along the Koori Cultural Walk above Point Addis Beach.

Surf Spots

  • Bells Beach: No visit to Torquay is complete without heading to Bells, the iconic surf spot that plays host to major competitions each year. Known for its legendary waves and adrenaline-pumping swells, it’s a very famous break.

  • Point Addis: If you're new to surfing or just looking for a more relaxed vibe, head to Point Addis. When the swell is big, you'll find gentle waves.

  • Jan Juc Surf Beach: This beach break has a few rips, but consistent waves on a Northerly wind. Good in-between spot for surfers.

  • Steps: For the more advanced surfers, this reef break is awesome, and a big trek down the long stairs (hence the name :)

  • Torquay Main Beach:You'll find the surf life-saving club and plenty of beginner-friendly waves. While it may be crowded, this beach is ideal for those learning to surf.

Picnic Spots

  • Cosy Corner: Nestled near Point Danger, Cosy Corner is the perfect spot for a seaside picnic. Good grassy spot with a few picnic tables too.

  • Bird Rock Lookout: This lookout offers wooden benches where you can sit back and relax - just make sure it’s not too windy!

  • Point Addis Lookout: Take in the beauty of Point Addis from the lookout point, where you can watch the waves roll in and soak up the breathtaking sunset views. This is one of my faves.

Ice Cream

  • Augustus Gelatery: A local favourite for a delicious scoop. The cookies and cream is great. Plus they have gluten free cones and dairy free ice cream if that's your vibe.

Co-Working Space

  • Happy Spaces: Need to get some work done? Head to Happy Spaces on Gilbert St for some of the best co-working with hot desks, private offices and amazing people. Plus ocean views!
